Burbank
Burbank is a small city located in the San Fernando Valley of Los Angeles County of Southern California. It is known as the "Media Capital of the World" and is home to the headquarters of Warner Bros. Entertainment and Disney. The NBC's West Coast studios were formerly located in Burbank and had tours for the public, but have since relocated to Universal City. The Burbank Studios, which now occupy the same site, do not offer public tours. The Disney studio lot in Burbank is not open for public tours, with two exceptions. First, Adventures by Disney includes a Disney studio tour as part of its lavish (and very expensive) six-day, five-night Southern California tour package. Second, the other way to tour the studio is to join the D23 fan club, which holds studio tours for paying members every few months.
Although commonly thought to be named for notable agricultural researcher Luther Burbank, the city is actually named after its founder David Burbank, a dentist and entrepreneur. Burbank has its own airport, Bob Hope Airport (BUR) which enjoys frequent service by Southwest Airlines to other California cities as well as Denver, Las Vegas, and Phoenix. Alaska, Delta, JetBlue, Seaport, United, and US Airways Express also serve Burbank. Air taxi and air charter companies such as Great Circle Aviation fly into Bob Hope Airport for small groups and individuals. Burbank is the only airport in the LA metro area that features a train station within walking distance of the airport terminal. Free shuttle buses are also available. The Amtrak Pacific Surfliner and Coast Starlight trains stop at Burbank Airport. Amtrak stops at the station every day of the week while local Metrolink commuter rail only serves Burbank Airport on weekdays.
Burbank has a Mediterranean climate. Summers are dry and warm with average highs around 30 °C from June to September and lows around 16-17 °C. Winters from December to February have highs around 20 °C and lows around 6 °C. The absolute high and low are 45 °C and -6 °C! Precipitation is low, with just over 400 mm a year, most of it falling during the winter months. Hardly any rain falls from June to September. In addition, the best time to visit is between March to September depending on your choice of weather. With an estimated population of 105,833, Burbank’s demographics reflect higher than average incomes, with households that are college educated and ethnically diverse, sharing an upscale urban perspective. As one of the aviation capitals of the United States, Burbank is linked to a number of historic moments in flight history. Some of Howard Hughes’ aircraft facilities were based in Burbank, and the pilot loved making a number of daring takeoffs from the city. Amelia Earhart’s connection with Burbank, on the other hand, is aligned with tragedy. In her attempt to make a historic flight around the globe, she flew a customized Lockheed Electra 10E that was built in a Burbank Facility. The plane, sadly, was of course lost.
Burbank's economy is based mostly on the entertainment industry; in fact, much of the tv and movie production takes place within the city. Companies like Warner Bros. Entertainment, Warner Music Group, The Walt Disney Company, ABC, Cartoon Network Studios with the West Coast headquarters of Cartoon Network, Nickelodeon Animation Studios, Cookie Jar Entertainment, New Wave Entertainment and Insomniac Games, have their headquarters or their facilities in the community.
